Rolling back the warehouse doors – a self storage introspective

Yesterday I wrote about Jon MooAllem’s recent New York Times article The Self-Storage Self – Storing All the Stuff We Accumulate, that provides an excellent in-depth look at the birth and relatively short history of the self storage industry in the U.S. I learned about this new piece from a reference that I saw in the most recent Inside Self Storage (ISS) Newsletter. Although most of my professional experience has been in the full service moving industry, I subscribe to the ISS newsletter and Self Storage Talk Forum because I believe the sponsor, Virgo Publishing, and the participating self storage members have done an excellent job building a collaborative community since opening for business several years ago.
From an outsider’s perspective, the media company’s marketing success hinges on the constant communications and informed involvement from a broad cross section of ISS members who bring a wide variety of backgrounds, business interests, and industry experience to the table.
It was no surprise, then, when I saw that one of the moderators has started a new forum thread about MooAllem’s article, SST in a NY Times Mag Article!!!.
I’m glad I visited because one of the regular contributors mentioned that New Hampshire Public Radio had just aired an interview that Word of Mouth’s Virginia Prescott recently conducted with Jon about his impressions about status of the self storage industry.
Click here to listen to Moo’s nine and half minute introspective about how today’s self storage industry provides a necessary service for a country (and economy) in transition.
This article was published at the Moving and Relocation page at the national media publication, Examiner.com – a new type of online journalism. Check it out!
