Goin’ Green – Community Box Exchange

Ever hear of Eugene Lemay? Moishe’s?   Neither may be familiar if you don’t live near the Big Apple, Chicago, Los Angeles, or San Francisco.

Eugene is the CEO of Moishe’s Moving and Storage, an accomplished artist and blogger. I don’t know Eugene personally. As far as I know, I’ve never even talked to him or had anything to do with his company.  But I was drawn to the man and his mission by the relaxed tone and casual agenda conveyed in his simple blog. He’s one of the few movers who use this new social medium to share information about their company with potential customers.

It was there that I first read about Moishe’s Box Exchange Program. Through the website, anyone can exchange re-usable boxes (cardboard, or otherwise) free of charge. Basically, the site functions like a public message board. If you’re looking for a certain type of boxes, you’re invited to have a look around and link up with someone giving theirs away. When you’re finished with your move, just post a message on our boards and give them to someone else. The more boxes you exchange the more resources that are saved, and that’s what going green is all about.

It’s sorta like the idea behind Freecycle.org, the rapidly growing online network started to promote waste reduction and help save local landscapes from being taken over by landfills. By using his company’s technology resources to offer this unique service, Moishe’s is not only providing a valuable resource to the communities they serve but they’re also making an impressive advertising statement with their corporate environmental contribution.

Who knows? It might even attract a customer or two.  And they’ve probably never heard of Gene either!
