In a letter issued to all Bekins Van Lines agent owners and independent owner operators, the Bekins' Board of Directors have agreed to allow Wheaton World Wide Moving to acquire the assets of Bekins.

According to the notice issued on December 13, 2011, the sale “will allow the Bekins brand to continue as part of a larger consolidated company and will allow our agents to continue to sell and operate our brand as part of larger and more financially stable system.” With over 300 locations in the U.S., the agent owned company has become one of the country's largest household goods movers.

As part of the transaction, the Bekins Tradeshow division will be separated into a separate entity and operated autonomously. The remaining van line functions at their Hillside, Illinois office will be consolidated at Wheaton's employee-owned headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana.

With annual revenue in excess of $160 million, Wheaton World Wide Moving is currently the sixth largest household goods carrier and the largest employee owned domestic mover in the U.S.

Founded in 1945, Wheaton offers private and corporate domestic and international household goods relocation services, and professional military move management services as well as special commodities and logistic transportation options which compliment and support the Bekins brand.

Bekins customers and their agents, employees and van operators will be in good hands! Many of Wheaton's executive management team and office staff consist of former employees of “the most recognized name in moving”, Mayflower Transit, Inc.

Mayflower was purchased by Unigroup, Inc. in 1995. The company was moved from it corporate headquarters in Carmel, Indiana to Fenton, Missouri. Unigroup is a $2 billion transportation and relocation services company that also operates the largest domestic household carrier, United Van Lines.

Wheaton credits both it's industry success and strong financial strength in the moving marketplace to it's partnership with approximately 250 agents nationwide.

This, and with Suddath acquiring City Moving (http://www.digitaljournal.com/pr/527145), is proof that success and growth is still possible in the moving & relocation industry.  We’re in a season of consolidation, and companies who make smart pickups over the next few years are on the right track for long term stability.  I do pity the smaller family-owned companies who are sitting there hoping & waiting for somebody to buy them out – it’s a buyer’s market.

Yeah, you’re right, James.  Some brands seems to have weathered the economic storm of the last few years better than others.

It appears, however, that the contraction is more permanent than temporary as more and more consumers and companies are finding new technology alternatives to circumvent the need for purchasing expensive relocation related products and services.

Oh, definitely.  But I also think the pool of quality movers is shrinking faster than the market is, meaning that anybody that survives will see a net growth in business.
