Moving? Feed a family for the holidays

By • Dec 14th, 2010 • Category: WHAT'S NEW

During the next few days, the media will be flooded with desperate, last minute messages of seasonal giving.

Unfortunately, the true meaning embodied in the joyful spirit of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa has largely been replaced with a commercial preoccupation of Santa and his Elves, holiday parties, yuletide festivities; and, of course, the popular tradition of exchanging obligatory office gifts and family presents.

The latest numbers show Americans are generally spending more this holiday. Yeh!

Yet, depending on where you live, you might notice that charitable contributions are down yet again this year – especially in many areas of the country still hard hit with high unemployment, continuing foreclosures, and hammered by the recent bout of severe winter weather.

For many families facing the stress of this type of seasonal reality, their holiday wish is simply for a secure roof over their head and a warm meal.

Historically, many consumers take advantage of the shortened work weeks and extended school breaks during the holidays to complete their local or long distance relocation.

If you're one of the folks scrambling to pack up everything in your home in preparation for an upcoming move, you can easily fulfill another Christmas wish by donating some of the food items in your pantry to a local family in need.

Move For Hunger is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit that strengthen the efforts of community food banks throughout the country by leveraging an existing network of specialized transportation companies and state and national moving and storage associations to create one of the largest, year-round service programs to fight hunger in America.

Every time a participating household goods moving company goes on an in-home estimate or to perform a residential relocation, the crew will offer their customer a box specifically for donated food items.

The homeowner can then either pack their unused, non-perishable items in the carton themselves, or direct their movers to pack it for them. Once collected, Move For Hunger makes arrangements for these much needed items to be delivered to the local food bank, where the contents can be distributed to families in need.

To celebrate the holidays, give the gift of food this year.  Feed the need!  Click here to find a moving company working to fight hunger in your area.

For those who donate, it's a personally gratifying way to give a little something worthwhile back to the community before it's actually time to leave. For the moving companies that participate, it's a wonderful way to support the nutritional needs of those less fortunate right where you live.
