RELO Roundtable…a gathering place

For folks who have stuff to move and the professionals who can help them

Who’s the ‘most wonderful, caring mover’?

By • Jun 1st, 2012 • Category: FEATURED STORIES, Ordinary Movers - Exceptional Moves

Best of the Best(2) Whos the most wonderful, caring mover?A new 'Ordinary Movers, Exceptional Moves' feature has been added in RELO Roundtable's left sidebar on the front page after "Grateful Mom" wrote asking how to locate the "most wonderful, caring mover" who helped her eight year-old son.

Apparently the boy was playing with a buddy when he started having a grand mal epileptic seizure.

The driver of a white(ish) moving van operating in her neighborhood stopped his truck in the middle of the road at around 4:15 Tuesday afternoon, instructed his crew to attend to the frightened friend and see if he could help locate the parents.

He then removed the boy's glasses, calmly moved him to the grass, rolled him on his side and sat with him until the tremors subsided.

According to a neighbor who witnessed about two-minutes of the episode, the driver told her he was laid off from his EMT job before he got into the moving business.

The movers stayed until the kid's mother arrived but left before she could even thank them or get their names, company name or truck ID number.

Please contact me if you know of a moving company operating a white or light gray three-axle straight truck that might have been operating on or near Latrobe Street in Parkersburg, West Virginia (zip 26101) on Tuesday, May 29th.

I'd also appreciate learning about any other similar acts of civic service, extreme kindness or unselfish personal fellowship displayed or exhibited by front-line moving and storage professionals everywhere.

Contrary to what's usually depicted by mainstream media and communicated at popular trash-your-mover websites, this industry has a lot of silent heroes we should all proudly recognize and honor everyday.

Hopefully the rapid growth of social media and micro-publishing will help us let the world know how many!

One of the reasons I enjoy working in the moving industry is because we
have the ability to work with people where they live and at a time where life
is changing, usually for the better. Moves are often associated with hope: looking
forward to a new and better life ahead. We have the honor of helping families
get settled into their new homes and get on with their lives.

While we celebrate this driver who took time out of his day and his crew who
was willing to help a child in need, there are thousands more who pack cartons
carefully, assemble units beyond the contract, pack precious items in a special
place to ensure they make it safely, search through all the cartons three times
to find the one that did not get checked off on the bingo sheet, or to find the
parts box, schedule an unanticipated shuttle and find the extra crew to handle
the unexpected work, work until 1:00 AM because enough crew members could not
be found, show up on time because the driver made a point to get through town
before rush hour, even though it meant getting up very early…

I think of the administration and support staff in the office who genuinely are
looking out for their drivers and crews: adjusters who communicate with
trainers so employees can be trained better to avoid future claims,
administrators evaluating labor-saving devices to help loaders work more
efficiently and safely, truck and trailer manufacturers interested in feedback so
they can make a better product specifically for our industry…  Think of the tremendous changes over the past 30
    years.

Working with the professionals who genuinely care has always inspired me to
keep on doing my best and to align with them whenever possible.  Our time on this earth is short.  Our industry is in a unique position to help
and encourage families during a vulnerable time of their lives and to help this
nation and our world move forward one home at a time.
