POLL: Local moving volume – Summer 2010

Last week I received a note with a rather curious question – “How are you planning to define 'local' moves in your poll?”
The inquiry stumped me. Personally, a local move has always meant any type of intercity material delivery, packing, crating, container stuffing, storage, or office and residential relocation which required the use of a moving company crew and equipment.
“What about the guys supplied to load a customer's rental truck or dumpster? Or staging a home using a POD? What if some laborers are assigned work at a competitor's moving company … or if a driver is scheduled to perform an estimate?
These types of relatively new work scenarios show how creative management at some local moving and storage and container shipping companies have changed their operations business models to survive the Great Recession.
So … for the benefit of this informal poll, a local move should be considered as any job that was legitimately placed on your dispatch schedule and from which your company eventually produced some type of revenue.
